Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
