Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
