Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
