Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
