Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
