Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps
August 25th, 2025 by Araceli

Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
