Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
