Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
