Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
