Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Techniques: The Past of Craps
January 7th, 2024 by Araceli

Be smart, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
