Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
