Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
