Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
