Be smart, play clever, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
