Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
