Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
