Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
