Master Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Background of Craps
August 22nd, 2021 by Araceli

Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
