Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps.
