Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
