Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
