February 24th, 2016 by Araceli

Be cunning, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
