Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps
October 23rd, 2015 by Araceli

Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
