Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
