The Background of Casino Craps
February 26th, 2010 by Araceli

The background of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game referred to as Hazard, which dates back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in 1813. Hazard is thought to be a descendant of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game played by Arabs.

The game developed as it traveled from the Arab territories to Europe and then to England. By the early 18th century, formal established rules for Hazard had been established. France adopted the English variation of Hazard and is thought to have been imported to the us by early French colonists. In the mid-Eighteenth century, when the British beat the French in Canada, the French colonists migrated to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a modernized ‘American’ version of Craps was created. The game headed west and is a favored game that is participated in all over the U.S. and throughout the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is presumed to be a French enunciation of the phrase crabs, which means two ones. There are 2 general types of Craps that are enjoyed-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, aptly named seeing as it’s gambled on the streets is where a player makes a point and then attempts to make that point. The betting is made either with or against the shooter and another player has to cover the bet in order for the dice game to go on.

In bank Craps, which is the familiar game, played in casinos, the betting house backs the casino game. The participants compete against the house-the house covers all of the bets of all of the individuals. Craps used to be a quite well-liked game but in the past 20 years had divided itself and different games, like poker and twenty-one became more popular. However, Craps is seeing a come back in fame once again in web betting houses and in real betting houses.
